Laura Mulveys

Laura Mulveys ideas on representation ‘in a world ordered by a sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female. The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure which is styled accordingly’. Laura Mulvey interpretation of this is that women are seen as sex objects in lots of male and female music video. They are portrayed as sex symbols. By the term ‘imbalance’ Laura is interpreting that the males are more important that women.  The phrase ‘eye contact with camera equals power’ a good example of this will be Dizzee Rascal video ‘Holiday’, there are naked women everywhere exposing after their body, making them look like sex symbols. They have no eye contact with the camera apart from the male which is telling us women have no power in the video but the male do. The beginning of Dizzee music video we see the male opening the door then looking at her from bottom to top to see if she’s sexy enough or exposed telling us that men have more power in the video then the females.  Laura Mulvey also discusses the idea that women  are ‘dismembered’- everything has been cut off the ‘limbs’ only showing referring back to Dizzee Rascal video we see they show parts of the women body while in Missy Elliott ‘All N my Grill’ we see the male full body is always shown. This is telling us again that male always has contact with the camera and is not dismembered.
Some women to have power over camera artist like Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Rihana etc.

Beyonce Video 'who ran the world' is showing us that she has poweful eye contact with the camera (as a female) also so does Rihanna. Dizzee rascals video is an example of Laura mulveys ideas about how woman are represented in the video.
