Short explanation of final song choice

The reason we have decided to choose this music video is because we believe we can make a better video to this song and make it our own. The music is soft, up beating and the lyrics is also very catchy

Three music video that have influenced our final planning

This was one of my favourite video of Rihanna's as the editing is very interesting and also the video its self is very entertaining. The mise en scene and the editing effects and the narrative inspired me a lot and also most of all the performance that Rihanna gives, a fun vibe.

Another video that influenced me is Bruno mars and B.O.B. The mise en scene and the editing of cuting girls.

Another video that inspired me as well is Selena Gomez music video. The Mise en scene is set in different places and theres so many different kind of editing

Our music video we have choosen

This is our choosen music video we shall be doing it to .
This is the lyrics

I'm sick and tired of people telling me what to do
Why don't they just let me be me
I do what I wanna do
But they don't understand that I
I got a point of view
They call me young and foolish
But I'm not too young to do this
So let me show and prove, cause

I just can't do
Everything that you want me to
I just can't be
All the things that you want me to be
I just can't live
The way that you want me to live
I just can't be
Be with out my love

I'm letting you know
Even if i had all that money
I just can't be without my
Don't care about all the honeys
I just can't do without my
Can't help but think ain't it funny
I just can't be without my
No matter what
I know that I can't do without my love

Damn I feel like a kid again
They always tripin like I dont know what I'm doing
but
Yeah, I know I can handle this
All I can do is keep it real
Be true to the way I feel
And just express myself, cause
I don't wanna be no one else
And I won't lie to myself, cause

I just can't do
Everyting that you want me to
I just can't be
All the things that you want me to be
I just can't live
The way that you want me to live
I just can't be
Be with out my love

I'm letting you know
Even if I had all that money
I just can't be without my
I don't care about all the honeys
I just can't do without my
Can't help, I think ain't it funny
I just can't be without my
And no matter what
I know that I can't do without my love

They just don't see what I see
Cause they don't know the love that's in me
And they try to tell me what to do
But a men's gotta do what he's gotta do, ooh
Can nobody tell me what, or when, or where
Or how to do, they aint in my shoes
So I'ma do my thing
Wont Let any pain Come up in between me and my love
so im letting you know

Even if i had all that money
I just can't be without my
Don't care about all the honeys
I just can't do without my
Can't help, I think ain't it funny
I just can't be without my
No matter what
I know that I can't do without my love

Even if i had all that money
I just can't be without my
Don't care about all the honeys
I just can't do without my
Can't help, I think ain't it funny
I just can't be without my
No matter what
I know that I can't do without my love

3 Music videos that have influenced our final planning decisions.

Kayne West's music video for 'Runaway' was one of our inspirations which influenced as through their use of editing, performance, narrative, mise en scene and effects. But most of all the performance they used with the dancers is what intrigued me the most. As we are going to include some sort of dance form in ours i particularly liked the large number of ballerinas, their matching costumes, and fluid movements. A high angle shot is used at the beginning in a long shot with Kayne and the dancers all the frame setting the scene. I liked the way close ups were used when Kayne was singing the lyrics, then jump cuts to him playing the piano. I loved the simplicity, purity of this video, no heavy editing, but alot of beautiful movement, & an outside mise en scene location which is where we will perform our video aswell.

Another music video, Bruno Mars 'Just the way you are' influenced me in their editing. My group really liked the idea at the beginning of this video, when Bruno writes and draws shapes with the casset tape, however we don't know whether we can recreate this as it requires alot of editing skills. I also liked the shots going between Bruno Mars and the girl he is singing to, reflecting on their love story, something we can play upon in our video.

Chris Browns music video 'With you' influenced me in a similar way Kanye West's video did when it came to the performance. His dancing in contrast to the ballerinas in 'Runaway' is more urban, street, something more modern and fresh. Plus the editing includes slow motion, something i'd lvoe to use in my music video when choreography is shown, it will add effect, the colour changes on his costumes are interesting and grabbed my attention. He has many costume changes which our dancers and our lip syncing person will have too to add interest diversity and imagination.

Andrew Goodwins Theory

Andrew Goodwins feels that traditional narratives does not apply to pop video's. The reasons for this, are that the pop video's are built around the song. The pop video uses the singer as both the narrator and character. The singer looks straight/directly into the the camera trying to involve the viewer at home (trying to give a music hall feeling). Pop video's also rely on repetition and because of this repetition we get used to and familiar with the genre and have certain expectations of what should be in the video's for example the the rock genre we expect to his head bobbing a guitar player on his knees playing etc...

The three minute single is based on building up to a climax then fading away. There are three types of relationship between a song and the music video. 1.Illustration: this is where the video tells the story of the lyrics and example of this Madonna 'Pap don't preach' the dance moves in this video is showing the mood and feeling in the video. 2.Amplification: the video introduces new meaning that do not contradict the lyrics. 3.Dis function: this is where there is little connection between the lyrics and video. An example of dis function is Micheal Jackson 'Man in the Mirrior' the song talks about self reflection however the video shows major world events. Also Andrew says women are presented as things for men to look at and they are passive. video's also presents bands in there younger days so that the older audience can still recognize. Some video are incorporate image from a film it was written for. An example is Celine Dion 'Heart will go on' from the from Titanic

Analysis of a music video - Best example of the music video form

The example I picked was Liock Essien 'How we roll'. i think this is very good example of the video form because it has stuck to the structure which most music video follow, which is, verse chorus verse chorus bridge chorus. in addition it also sticks within the genre of R'n'B where there is a beautiful girl and this is what we expect so the artist has worked within his genre. this is also a narrative with participation as the artsist is singing which is narrative and he is the one who is with the girl which is participation. there is also amplification in this video and the video amplifies what the artist is saying because they are on the run on a motor bike and in song there is a line thats say 'thats how we roll' therefore adding or backing up what the artist is singing about.

Original video for our song choice.

Nathan: Do without my love.

This original video matches some of the lyrics that he is singing, so it reflects of amplification, however in contrast our music video will show disjunction as our story will not relate to the lyrics, it will not have a narrative to match.

We decided to do this because then we wouldn't be restricted, we can use all of our ideas without worrying whether it will fit in or not, of course we will still follow the genre it is based in: soft r&b, pop. Also something which will differ is that our music video will include dancing/dance routines, which do without my love does not include. We will be including lyrical/contemporary genre of dance, hopefully on a bridge in London, for more effect.

Our final song choice.

This is our final song choice for our A level media: Nathan 'Do without my love.' We chose this song because we liked the genre it presented, soft r&b pop, we liked the vibe, and the beat, which subtly changes but still keeps our attention through out. As it is sung by a male singer we have decided
Samarge will be the main lip sync singer.

Lyrics:
I'm sick, I'm tired of people telling me what to do
Why don't they just let me be me

List of potential songs.

Here is a list of all our potential songs we were thinking of using.

After watching Jay Sean's 'Ride' video we weighed up all the pros and cons, realising that it was too slow, plus we decided the genre wasn't right.

We particularly liked 'Stay' because it's soft and one of our favourite jay sean songs however we realised it was too slow, so we couldn't do some much with the song.

Aeroplanes was another one of our favourite british songs.

'Do without my love' by nathan had a good vibe, soft r&b feel to it which we really liked.

Lyrics I Have to Learn

In our music video i am the artist and therefore I will be the main one lip syncing. So since I'm going to be singing I have to know what I'm singing so I'm going to have to learn some lyrics. here are the lyrics that i will need in order for this video to be successful.

What is a Music Video?

A music video is a short clip with a mixture of a song and imagery, produced for promotional or artistic purposes. Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing device intended to promote the sale of music recordings. Music videos use a wide range of styles of film making techniques including animation and live action. The music video is composed by adding images to music.
The music video director creates moving pictures for an already existing tune. A music video lacking a coherent narrative based on visuals and lyrics uses unifying aspects which are a distinctive trait of music. Images are bound together by the beat and other musical features. Sometimes the musical elements shape of the moving pictures. Movements like footsteps are often synchronized with the beat, so that people in the music video seem to walk in synch to the music. Melodic phrases can also be visualized by tilting the camera verticality to match the musical phrases up and down travel on the scales.
In many music videos a new meaning is added to the banal lyrics through metaphorical language, often with an amusing twist. When presented well, the concurrence of lyrics and text opens a dimension that an create a poetic experience. The greater the leap between the content of the lyrics and the imagery in this metaphorical joining, the more difficult it becomes for viewers to understand and interpret the context. The opposite of the metaphorical joining of lyrics and images occurs when the illustration to the lyrics are simply illustrated by the visual imagery. For instance, if a dog is mentioned in the lyrics, we see a dog on the TV-screen, if a child is mentioned, we are shown a child. Like a salad of images where the visual story is missing, the story is carried by the music and lyrics and not by an independent visual story.
To begin the analysis of the image the basic ideas behind the footage must be discerned in order to identify the key concept behind the video. By manipulating colour, motive setting, story footage, clothing and so forth, the music video director creates a couple of ideas which are repeated and varied. The concept is to rearrange visual motifs so that the work forms a whole.
There seems to be different layers of perception when a human being is audio-viewing a music video. Interacting layers of perception may be instinctive, inter-subjective and individual, which in turn activate social aspects such as family, peer group, region, country, language etc. When these different layers interact with unique personal memories and instinctive behaviour the analysis of music video becomes complicated. Situation variables occur frequently and they are often the content. In my experience many young people are unable to view a music video if they dislike the artist or the music. To give a simplified explanation, music video pictures can be an interpreted as a merging of three traditions of moving images: singing performance, visual story-telling, and the non-narration of modern art.

But what people usually always forget is that the main reason for music videos are to entertain.

Technical skills I have developed during AS.

In the AS year, we learn many technical skills from filmmaking to editing to even editing sound. Live Type was one of the programs we used, this program allowed us to create all sorts of different fonts, using special effects, to letters jumping over each other, or even smoking. It is also possible to create custom LiveFonts, but the necessity of generating a separate movie file for each letter makes the file sizes very large. Final Cut Pro was the editing program we used to put together all our clips, add fades, dissolves, overlapping effects, shorten clips and finalize our thriller.

Soundtrack Pro is another program we used, we created our own soundtrack, literally anything is possible! There is an never ending list of sounds to choose from, orchestral, natural sounds, singing, instruments, the list goes on.

Another new programme which I have learnt to use is Handbrake. This is a programme which converts files into another suita
ble type of file so that you can upload videos onto the blog. It converts MOV. files into MP4. files.

At the beginning of the year we all got introduced to the JVC camera.

We should be very careful with the camera lenses as it can get fingerprints on it which would make shots look dirty and blurry. Keep the camera away from water or fire. If there is a scene in the rain make sure a big umbrella is used. Make sure when not using the camera the lense is closed, to stop dust from getting on the lense. The camera is very expencive and fragile, like a baby it needs to be treated with good care.

Battery: The battery is inserted in the battery slot which is located at the back of the camera. If you want to take out the battery, push the eject button which can be found on top of the battery slot. Do not try and force or pull the battery out, or this will damage the battery slot which may cause the batteries not to work when placed in the camera.

Memory Card: The memory card is used to save your clip when filming, its like a USB, you can save your work on it. Using the memory card, you can simply slide it into the memory slot on your PC and transfer the files onto your hard drive. The memory card slot can be found at the left hand side of the camera, bottom of the mini screen.

Camera Tripod:  Slowly slide the camera on the top of your tripod until you hear a click, when you hear the click, that's when the camera is locked in, there is a further security botton on the side which you turn which completely locks the camera in so it cannot even slide the slightest bit. If you want to release the camera from the tripod, push the eject button then slide it out.

Skills developed during AS.

During AS i have developed many skills from using different websites, to different editing, sound programmes, using cameras and also working in a group and sustaining a good bond between others in your group. Programmes which i have learnt to use are final cut pro, soundtrack pro, handbrake, livetype, base tracking skills, overlapping in editing, adding fonts, adding special effects such as fade in fade away and dissolve. i also enjoyed working in a group because it allowed me to work with others, share ideas and co operate, as well as meet new people. i particularly liked doing the practical work, going straight out and filming, as we knew all our ideas worked and we planned well beforehand.

What Is the function of a music video?

What is a music video
A music video or song video is a short film integrating a song and imagery, produced for promotional or artistic purposes. Many music videos use a wide range of ways to do there video. Live action filming, documentaries, animation, narrative or non narrative approach. some videos can even mix all these or a couple together it depends on what they are trying to achieve. All music videos have repeated shots for example the chorus, also the video is edited on the beat and a example of this is the bike song by Mark Ronson & The Business Intl.

In the modern world of today almost every artist needs to have a video. why you ask, well, a music video makes an artist known the audience know who they are and recognize them. so it promotes the artist as well as the song. it can even be use to help sell the artist album that maybe upcoming. the video can tell us the genre the artist is working in for example a hip hop video we as the audience expect to see loads of money, stunning girls and flashy houses with expensive cars. The video also adds another dimension to the song as it gives us a visual element and create a connection with the viewer and artist. The video mainly entertains us and give us that all important image the artist is trying to portray.

This is an example of hip hop with the money and girls and all the bling
and this is the image the artists are trying to portray.

Copies of copy right clearance

This is an email I sent to atlantic records requesting for permission to use Plan B's song called 'She said' however this is not the song we will be using.
This is what it says

"To whom it may concern

The reason i need to use this song is for my A-level media coursework and i would like to use this song to make my own video in order to pass my media coursework. it would be great if you could allow me to use this song to help me pass my subject. thank you for reading please can you get back to me as soon as possible so i know if i will be able to use it. thank you"

Practise Lip Sync

This Is the final edited practise lip sync.

New Skills I Learnt When I Completed The Lip Sync

In the month of June we did a new skill called lip sync. The song we had to lip sync was called ‘stand by me’.  One of the new skills we had to learn where miming, we had to mime the words of the songs in time which was not so easy. the reason this was not so easy is because we did not know the words and we had to learn them in a short space of time.  Another skill we learnt was base track editing, we learnt how mark each clip in time with a particular word and mark from there in order for it to be in line with the song. I also learnt how to put it on the timeline in time with the song unlike when we did the thriller we would be able put the clip anywhere. we learnt how to cut and delete to the beat which is base track editing. We film the song 5 times from different angles and range of shots so we could do fast quick edits so you different angles of the artist singing like in the professional videos and so we could chooses what clip we want to be shop at a certain time. We learnt how to sync  the video, the song, and the lip movements at the same time. here is a visual of what i have been explaining.

Bass track editing

Digipak.

Strenghts
I believe that my groups digipak was very interesting, keeping it very simple with photographic images that link to the artist. The lighting is very natural, the setting relates to the video also, and I believe that our digipak is very well produced due to the time we were given.
Weaknesses
Due to a short period time we were given to create this digipak, I believe it could have been alot better. Including fonts, and the very obvious things that are on digipaks, e.g. barcode, copry right information etc.
Another weakness is that I believe we could have created a 3 panels front and back.

This is the final lip sync video we produced.

Technical skills I developed during the AS year

During the As year I learnt A load of skills here are a few of them;

-       How to set up the camera such as not touching the lens as your fingerprints get left and how to set the right focus and zoom in order to get a quality shot done. also to use an umbrella if we wanted to film in the rain so that it does not damage the camera plus learning how to put the memory card in properly.

-       Using sound track pro and live type . Sound track pro is one program we learnt to use. this program can allow us to add special effects, sounds and even a composition if we need it. also it helpful as we could import our film and watch the thriller while adding the sound so we knew where we wanted sound or if we wanted to edit any sounds we didn't want. live type is another program we learnt to use which made us be able to add text but not just any text, texts with effects and positioning and time they appear on screen.

-       Final cut to editing and cut and add clips together. During the year i learnt how to edit my clip cut the parts out i don't want by using the input which is I and the output which is O. Also adding the clips together on the time line so that there are no gaps or blackness in the videos we made. we also learnt how to zoom in and frame a particular shot in final cut which would improve our work overall.

-       How to film range of shots such close ups and extreme close ups. during the year of AS we learnt a full rage of shots such as long shot, wide shot, mid shot, high angle shot and low angle shot. we learnt not to use the same shot every time and how different angel and rage of shots add effect to that particular shot.

-       Learnt how to transport clips and photographs from the memory card to the computer then upload it to blogger. when he had finished film we had to upload the clips to the computer and save them to our group hard drive and then put it into final cut then render it if it wasn't saved properly. once we had completed our video we had to put the clip into handbrake so that it can be converted to a mp4 and uploaded to blogger.

State of the music industry in 2012.

1) How are audiences targeted by music videos?Through youtube, MTV, social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, words spreading mouth to mouth from person to person.

2)What are the audience pleasure of music video?
Entertainment is the main reason which everyone forgets about! Seeing an artist and feeling connected with them by making eye contact with you into the camera. They can make opinions, assumptions and remember the song by the music video.

3) How important are music videos to the music indusry?Very important to get publicity, get noticed to get fans, and so that the audience can make a decision as to whether they like the artist and what they're trying to represent, makes the song visual and exciting as well as memorable.
4)Which record labels dominate the music industry?Itunes.

5)Which major labels are left?Sony music entertainment, EMI group, Warner Music group & Universal music group.

6)What role do music videos play in the 21st century?Visual culture.

How the music industry uses social networking sites

Social networking sites like facebook is making a lot of artist 'famous' and is a good way of advertising there music to get to people. When Myspace was famous Lilly Allen is one of the famous example. she promoted her music through Myspace. Jessie J is another example of becoming famous through youtube.
Social networking is a way of promoting music and also the artist. Myspace isnt that famous or well known any more. Facebook is very popular. There is more facebook user than the population of America!

Moodboard.

Extra research for our music video

For todays lesson (27th september 2011) we have been searching for our music videos that inspires us, we looked at lots of music videos on youtube:

After watching so many videos we decided we will do Jean sean 'ride it' but then we realised its a bit too slow and very sexual. So as a group we have decided to do Nathan 'Do without your love; (which is above)

Digipak.

my digipak
Analysis

Positive :
  • The good thing is that the colour scheme is carried throughout the whole digipak.
  • It tells you the main details such as the name of CD, who the artist is and the record company.
  • it has the bar code and website so if the person wants to know more about the artist they can.
  • It has the number one hit on the front cover which encourage people to buy it.
Negatives:
  • The picture looks stretched on the front.
  • there are are too many empty spaces on the digipak .
  • the layout is not very interesting.
  • the font use is very simple and dull.

My favourite previous student video.

This is my favourite previous A2 students music video, which I found on the 'wall of fame' link. I particulary liked this one because of it's variety of shots, imaginative mise en scene, great lip syncing anf acting, flowed well and kept me interested.
http://vimeo.com/17557972

Here is a shot of all their props, special effects such as smoke, mise en scene of cupcakes, bottles, posions, butterflies and flowers. This is an extreme close up which emphasises the mise en scene, colours, effects and lighting.

Here is an overlapping shot of two different girls, both smoking, telling us something about their character.

This shot is mid shot of the main girl who lip syncs near candles, sourrounded in smoke & in her costume.

Another shot showing off the amazing mise en scene.
